HALL OF HONOR 2003
William Carl Black
YHS Class of 1944
Regardless
of his career achievements, Bill Black would have won a place in this award
series. All his life he has modeled a fine balance between valor and
humility, learning and labor, high ethics and basic common sense. To his
many admirers, he exemplifies the ideal man whose integrity is absolute. He
retired from the state bench in 1989 after 16 years as Judge of the 146th
District Court of Bell County, Texas, but continued for many years as a
Senior District Judge holding court in Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Travis,
McLennan and other counties. A second benchmark came in 1987 when he retired
as Commander, U.S. Naval Reserve, after over 40 years’ service. Early in
his career he was counsel to the House Agriculture Committee, U.S. Congress.
In preparation for a career in the judiciary he earned the BBA, MS, and LLB
degrees at Baylor University. Bill is the son of legendary sheriff Carl C.
Black (1899-1989) and his wife, Mary Agnes McDermott (1905-1954). Sheriff
Black served Milam County law enforcement 36 years 1941-1976, a man of
immense stature in his field. The names Black and McDermott are among Milam
County’s historic first families.
