Hall of Honor 2007

Harmon Watson Kelley, M.D.

 OJT Class of 1963

Valedictorian of his 1963 senior class at O. J. Thomas High School, Dr. Kelley reached his goals in medicine via Prairie View A&M University, The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso.  After serving as Assistant OB-GYN Chief at Killeen’s Darnell Army Hospital he went into private practice in San Antonio in 1978. Now 30 years later he remains a practicing physician who carved out a widely respected career and place for himself in the city. His many honors are capped by the 2006 Ashbel Smith Outstanding Alumnus Award from UT-Galveston Medical School, and establishment of his 2004 namesake, the Harmon W. Kelley, M.D., School of Excellence, a charter elementary school in San Antonio.  Dr. and Mrs. Kelley assembled what became a nationally noted collection of African American art hailed by museums, art dealers and scholars. The San Antonio Museum of Art organized the collection named for the Kelleys as a national traveling exhibit that included The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.  He has endowed a scholarship at UT-Galveston Medical School for outstanding medical students graduated from Prairie View A&M University.
