HALL OF HONOR 2005

Make McDermott, Jr.

YHS Class of 1958

Make teaches Mechanical Engineering and directs the Institute for Innovation and Design in Engineering, Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University. He led the research team making major contributions to personal transportation for handicapped persons, including the widely accepted VA Standard for Wheelchair Lifts for vans. Texas Rehabilitation Commission hailed his achievement. Make’s passion is teaching and mentoring students; numerous awards he has received during his 33-year career at Texas A&M show that he ranks among the most effective teachers and mentors on campus. Cameron students may view Make’s successes in automotive engineering as the most exciting role of many that he plays. Texas A&M student teams for which he is faculty advisor enter Formula SAE, the world’s premier student design competition, winning the world championship in 2000, 5th in 2001 and 2nd in 2004. His teams also won the Road & Track magazine Triathlon in both 2004 and 2005. Sports Car Club of American awarded him the Carroll Smith Mentor’s Cup as the outstanding Formula SAE advisor in 2005. Make’s B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are from The University of Texas. His parents are the late Make McDermott and Emma Thomas McDermott.
