Make McDermott, Jr.
YHS Class of 1958
Make teaches Mechanical Engineering and directs the Institute
for Innovation and Design in Engineering, Dwight Look College
of Engineering at Texas A&M University. He led the research
team making major contributions to personal transportation
for handicapped persons, including the widely accepted VA
Standard for Wheelchair Lifts for vans. Texas Rehabilitation
Commission hailed his achievement. Make’s passion is
teaching and mentoring students; numerous awards he has received
during his 33-year career at Texas A&M show that he ranks
among the most effective teachers and mentors on campus. Cameron
students may view Make’s successes in automotive engineering
as the most exciting role of many that he plays. Texas A&M
student teams for which he is faculty advisor enter Formula
SAE, the world’s premier student design competition,
winning the world championship in 2000, 5th in 2001 and 2nd
in 2004. His teams also won the Road & Track magazine
Triathlon in both 2004 and 2005. Sports Car Club of American
awarded him the Carroll Smith Mentor’s Cup as the outstanding
Formula SAE advisor in 2005. Make’s B.S., M.S. and Ph.D.
degrees are from The University of Texas. His parents are
the late Make McDermott and Emma Thomas McDermott.
