HALL OF HONOR 2007

Drayton McLane, Sr., CHMA Class of 1921

Gladys Blaylock McLane, CHS Class of 1920

Drayton McLane, Sr.(1901-1994), except for two brief periods, lived his entire life as a contributing citizen of Cameron. Completing grade school in Cameron, he graduated Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN. He was the only son of Robert McLane, founder of McLane Wholesale Grocery Company, and his wife Kate Paden.

Drayton rose in the family business to become president in 1950. Later he was recognized for his leadership by his industry when named President of both Texas Wholesale Grocer’s Association and the United States Wholesale Grocer’s Association.

His wife, Gladys Blaylock McLane (1903-1992), graduated Cameron High School and taught school in the Cameron area prior to her marriage to Drayton in 1929. They became parents of JoAnn McLane McClaren, Kate McLane Dimmitt, and Drayton McLane, Jr.

Both Drayton and Gladys were faithful in service to their churches:he in the First Presbyterian Church and she in First Baptist Church. He also served the local school district as a trustee, the Cameron Chamber of Commerce as president, and leadership posts in San Andres Masonic Lodge #170.

After her children were grown, Gladys went into business with her sister, Dorothy Blaylock Harden. Together they owned and operated Harden’s Jewelry and Gifts in Cameron. Drayton became Chairman of McLane Company in 1985.

They lived their lives, personally and professionally, by a code of highest Christian principles.
