HALL OF HONOR 2005

Oxsheer Meek Smith

Cameron High School Class ca. 1896

Oxsheer Meek Smith, community servant, banker and lifelong resident of Milam County. Born in 1880, he was the son of Hilliard Fort Smith and Viola Oxsheer who were descendants of Milam County founding families, the Wilsons and Oxsheers. The Wilson and Oxsheer families settled in Central Texas in 1837. He attended UT-Austin and graduated from Eastman National Business College in New York, his father’s alma mater. Oxsheer began his banking career in 1903 at what is now the Citizens National Bank of Milam County. When his father retired as bank president in 1916, Oxsheer at the age of 36 became one of the youngest bank presidents in Texas. During his 71-year career at the bank, Oxsheer became known as an innovative leader in the industry. Many have fond memories of the special Halloween activities which Oxsheer hosted annually. Living almost 94 years, he stood by his faith, family, bank, friends, community and state.
