build cities. Richard S. Slocomb’s leadership left a lasting
mark on a still growing area in Greater Houston.
He holds
distinction among graduates of C. H. Yoe High School as the only
known founding chairman of the board of a now flourishing
community college that serves more than a half million students
yearly. He led earliest growth of San Jacinto College for 11
years from its beginning in 1960. SJC provides higher and
vocational education in the Harris County communities of
Pasadena, Pearland, LaPorte, Channelview, Galena Park, Clear
Lake, Deer Park, and parts of Houston proper on three campuses
and seven extension centers. SJC trustees
recognized Dick’s leadership with a lasting namesake, Slocomb
Auditorium. Then in 1971 Gov. Preston Smith appointed him for 7
years to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. SJC was not
the only institution he grew from the ground up. Slocomb
Insurance Agency in Galena Park, founded by Dick and his brother
Guy V. Slocomb, continues in operation after 57 years.
Additionally, he was founding president of Universal Savings and
Loan in Houston and building chairman for his church. His
leadership skills appeared when he was elected president of his
1942 YHS senior class. He then graduated from Southwestern
University and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps before entering
the business world.
