HALL OF HONOR 2007
Oleta
Modesette Wise
YHS Class
of 1925
The Yoe Fund
proudly salutes Oleta and all mothers who taught school out of
love of learning, and in order to help educate their own and
their neighbors’ children. Nationwide such teachers are
countless in number; their contributions to society beyond
telling. Like Oleta, most continue to teach long after their
children grow up. Born near
Tracy in Milam County, and blessed with health and intelligence,
Oleta graduated C. H. Yoe High School in 1925 with honors. She
married I. V. Wise in 1927 and together they reared their four
children while farming and ranching on the Wise family ranch in
the Milano Independent School District. In 2007 the ranch has
been in family hands 127 years. Three of
their children graduated high school as valedictorians; the
fourth was salutatorian. Their lives and careers reflect their
parents’ orderly values. Oleta began
her 30-year teaching career in 1943 in Milano Independent School
District with an emergency teaching certificate and only one
year of college, a path often followed by teachers in earlier
days. By attending college in summers—again a common
practice—she earned the required semester hours to receive her
bachelor’s degree in 1956 from what is now The University of
Mary Hardin-Baylor. Her warm
relationships with friends, former students, and family are
legendary in her community. She will be 100 years February 8,
2008.
