HALL OF HONOR 2005
Robert Irby Wise, M.D., Ph.D., MACP
YHS Class of 1932
C. H. Yoe High School honor student and track champion, Bob
Wise, once of Ben Arnold and Maysfield, remains grateful to
the Cameron Lions Club for a $50.00 scholarship in 1932 paying
tuition for one year at The University of Texas-Austin. His
hometown public education and financial aid paid off as he
continued his education rising to national and international
leadership in microbiology, internal medicine and infectious
disease. When the 150,000-member American College of Physicians
(ACP) in 2001 chose about 6,000 physicians to become Fellows
(FACP), it set apart only 35 others to be Masters of the American
College of Physicians (MACP), the highest honor available.
Bob Wise was named a Master. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate
of Science in June 1980 by Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia,
in tribute to his scientific achievements. This was on top
of degrees he earned at UT-Austin (B. A. in 1937), the University
of Illinois (M.A in 1938 and Ph.D. in 1942), and UT-Medical
Branch, Galveston (M.D. in 1950). His parents are the late
Jesse P. and Louise Wise memorialized in Ben Arnold cemetery.
